Waipā Foundation’s mission is to restore Waipā’s vibrant natural systems and resources, to inspire healthy, thriving communities connected to their resources, and to lead by example. The Waipā Foundation is a Native Hawaiian 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which stewards the 1,600 acre Waipā ahupuaʻa (watershed; traditional land division from the uplands (ma uka) to the coast (ma kai)). Since its establishment in 1994, born from the activism of  Kauaʻi’s North Shore elders to protect Waipā ahupuaʻa from resort development, Waipā Foundation has been steadfast in serving our mission.

Through a long-term lease from the land owner, Kamehameha Schools, Waipā Foundation has transformed the ahupuaʻa into a thriving, living learning center that cultivates resilience for ʻāina (natural resources) and community. This is achieved through various programs, projects, and events that serve one of more of the following areas of work: community development, traditional ecological stewardship, ʻāina-based education, and cultural foodways. Waipā Foundation programs serve hundreds of Kaua‘i families while also welcoming over 5,000 lifelong learners annually from around Hawai‘i and beyond. Almost all who visit Waipā leave transformed as Waipā’s mission work resonates with a widening community of supporters.
