SOCIAL MEDIA

If you’re new to Facebook, Instagram, X, or social media in general, start by creating an account/page for your organization. Below is a list of ways you can begin engaging your community for North Shore Give Week.

  • Get started by liking/following North Shore Give on Facebook and Instagram.
  • Connect your Instagram and Facebook accounts so that your posts are automatically posted on both platforms. Connecting Facebook and Instagram harnesses the power of both platforms at once and allows you to reach a wider audience.
  • Also follow/like other nonprofits, people, organizations from your nonprofit’s page. When you follow, you get followers back!
  • Promote your social media page: include a link to your page on your website’s homepage, your newsletters and emails, add it to your business card and email signature line…basically everywhere and anywhere. Ask your staff members, board members, volunteers, and donors to like the page and help you promote it.
  • In your personal account, tag the page and ask your friends / followers to check it out. Ask employees, volunteers, and board members to do the same.
  • Talk it up! Post interesting information about your nonprofit and share success stories and photos. Ask your followers questions to engage them in dialogue. Remember to keep posts brief (though X has a limit of 280 characters, even less is better). You don’t want to lose your audience by presenting lengthy updates.
  • Tell everyone that your nonprofit is participating in North Shore Give Week. Be sure to tell them what it’s all about by using some of the suggested messaging in this toolkit. Let them know how they can donate and ask them to spread the word.
  • Use hashtags: people who are interested in a particular event or organization will follow the hashtag to stay up-to-date.

Use the #northshoregiveweek hashtag in your personal and nonprofit’s social media posts. Use other creative hashtags; 3-5 hashtags per post is the sweet spot. Start with a branded or specific hashtag like a tagline or fun phrase. Follow this with the name of your nonprofit, then a broader hashtag tied to your cause (ex: #savinglives, #endinghomelessness, #spreadingthelove). Having a succession of hashtags helps with branding.
  • Find powerful images. Photos that focus on people, positive images, and your mission in action will help you draw in new followers.
  • Canva.com is a great way to take your own photos or a stock image to the next level and offers templates to help you get started with creating social media posts and other images/video. It has stock photos, video templates, and editing tools. Best of all, it offers a free subscription to 501(c)(3) nonprofits!
  • Do not give individual donor shoutouts without the donor’s consent.
  • Cross-promote by liking and re-sharing other nonprofits’ posts to boost your visibility in the community and show that you’re engaged in the community.
  • We recommend posting at least 2-3 times per week to stay in your supporters’ feeds.
  • Don’t just follow or post only. Respond to posts like you’re holding a conversation and let people know that you’re engaged. You never know where this may lead.
  • Have fun! Social media can be a playful platform and the perfect opportunity to let the unique personalities, humor and convictions of your organization shine through your photos, captions and hashtags.
  • Post a quick thank-you message on social media immediately after North Shore Give Week is over and follow up with a longer heart-felt message a day or two after.
  • Do the above and repeat...again and again.
